I reviewed the book, “Different Shades Of Love by Komal”, yesterday and enjoyed it a lot.

I got the opportunity to interview her, and here are some excerpts from the interview.

Thank you, Komal for the interview.

Sonalify : What inspired you to write?

Komal : Well, even I don’t remember exactly what triggered me. But I do remember that I wrote my first poem in class X in Hindi. It was about Rani Laxmibai. Although I don’t recall the whole poem but the first two lines were-

कौन उठाएगा बीड़ा,

कौन समझेगा उसकी पीड़ा

So, we can say that I always felt like writing about social issues especially women and their struggles inspire me a lot. The movie two states also played a big role in inspiring me to write. Somewhere in my heart, I also feel that I can bring a change in this world by my writings. I believe in the saying that a pen is mightier than the sword.

Sonalify : Could you please tell me something about your writing process? Where and how did you start writing ‘Different shades of love’?

Komal : Honestly speaking when I thought about writing something, I had no clue when to start or what to write (that’s in 2014). Yes, I was clear that I want to write about a girl and her struggles but how to build a story around it was the main challenge. Than once in September 2015, while travelling to work, a thought came to my mind. I quickly wrote it in my phone. It was only a paragraph by then but I didn’t know that it will be the opening scene of my novel. That’s why my novel’s story is set in 2015. After that I still struggled about how to develop this story and finally in 2016 I started writing in a fully fledged manner.

My writing process is very funny because I used to work in night shift in 2016 so, my day would start in evening. I used to write while travelling to work in cab. Sometimes, my cab mates would give me weird looks about why I am so engrossed in my phone and some nosy ones would peep too in my phone. Then I use to send those notes to my email so that I can save it in a word file.

After returning from work, I used to write again in the morning. This is how I completed my novel. But one thing which I found was when you start writing a scene, it feels like someone is whispering in your ear and you can’t think about anything else at that point of time. Writing is meditation to me.

Sonalify : I am intrigued by the title. How did you choose that for your story?

Komal : This one is also a funny story. I had completed the novel and was thinking about the titles. I had Different Shades of Love in my mind and my friend had some other option. We both forgot the second option that she suggested for the novel and we ended up with this title.

Why this title, simply because the story revolves around friendships, love and their different shades. Love is not limited to love between a couple, it could be your parents or friends too, so the title Different Shades of Love is apt.

Sonalify : Your top 5 favourite books and why?

Komal : That’s a difficult question because I love books. As a kid, I was fascinated by Enid Blyton’s adventures so my first pick would always be “Famous Five”,

“Secret Seven”, “Malory Towers”. I can read these books anytime, anywhere. They are a part of my childhood. Then I like “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen. It’s a classic novel and if you into reading you can’t miss it. I liked Chetan Bhagat’s “Five point someone” a lot. It’s a story that every student can connect to. I am a fan of Khaled Hosseini’s works too. I read “The Kite Runner” and “A Thousand Splendid Suns “. The way he brings out emotions is commendable.

I also like “Life is what you make it” by Preeti Shenoy.

I can go on and on about books.

Sonalify : Describe ‘Komal’ as a writer…

Komal : Me as a writer is new, a bit of an amateur in this field but wants to write about human emotions. It takes her to a different world. She never wants to stop writing.

Sonalify : What are you working on next?

Komal : I have thought about it. I want to write a rape story. I feel very strongly about this menace of rape. With the current “Me Too” movement a lot of stories are being revealed daily about sexual abuse. We as girls daily face situations where someone will stare, grope us or pass inappropriate comments but we do nothing about it which in turn gives these monsters leverage to do whatever they want and hence a rape happens.

Sonalify : Any advice for aspiring writers?

Komal :  I don’t know if I am the right person to give someone an advice but I would like to say just one thing that believe in yourself and don’t give up ever. Writing is a process and it takes some time. Sometimes you would feel that I can’t write this scene or its not coming along but patience is the key. I remember leaving a scene for months but my friend motivated me to keep going and finally I achieved  my dream of publishing a book.

Thanks again Komal for giving me this opportunity.

God luck for your future endeavours. Looking forward to read your next book. 🙂
