Book Review : The Alex Cave Series Book 4, Gravity By James M. Corkill

About The BookWinner of the 2016 Best Indie Book Award in Science Fiction, an artificial gravity device could cause our extinction, and only geologist Alex Cave can save the day. Alex receives an urgent message about an unusual geologic event in Iceland, and since he has dealt with strange phenomena in the past, he is put in charge of the investigation. He and his friend descend deep into the lava tube of an ancient volcano and discover a 180-million-year-old alien artifact of incredible power. Before he can take it to a safe location, it is stolen and activated and begins dragging satellites into the atmosphere and changing the orbit of the moon, but it won’t turn off. The tidal affect starts ripping apart shorelines around the world, causing devastating destruction to life and property, and Alex begins a desperate race to find the artefact and shut it down while also dealing with the kidnapping of his family. As if that wasn’t bad enough, a massive emerald asteroid with a core of solid gold is on a collision course with Earth and will impact in six-days, killing every living thing on the planet. Can Alex find a way to save humanity from extinction?

About the Author : (In his words) Hello. I’m James M. Corkill, a Veteran, and retired Federal Firefighter from Washington State, USA. I was an electronic technician and studied mechanical engineering in my spare time before eventually becoming a firefighter for 32-years and retiring. I’ve since settled into the Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina, and I have a fantastic view from my writing desk. I began writing in 1997, and was fortunate to meet a famous horror writer named Hugh B. Cave, who became my mentor. In 2002, I rushed to self-published a dozen copies of Dead Energy so my wife could see my book before she was taken by cancer. When my soul mate was gone, I stopped writing and began drinking heavily. My favorite quote. “When you wake up in the morning, you never know where the day will take you.” In 2013, I met a stranger who recognised my name and had enjoyed an old copy of Dead Energy, except for the ending. When she encouraged me to start writing again, I realized this chance meeting was just what I needed to hear at the right moment. I quit drinking and began the rewrite of Dead Energy into The Alex Cave Series, and I’m thankful for that fateful encounter.

My Say : Woah!! The title reminded me of one of my favourite movies. This actually made me curious to know more about the book. The Alex Cave Series takes the reader to many intriguing places of our world and universe. In the fourth tale of the Alex Cave series we find Alex facing some new challenges. The life he lived while he was single and facing down serious world threats via alien technology for Director of National Security Martin Donner was actually very stressful but it was also quite a rush. Settled in with Fala and her daughter Halona at his home and back to his core role as a professor at Montana State College at Boseman, he finds himself conflicted about his life. Can he really settle down? Can he find a way to save humanity? Is it wrong for him to miss the sense of adventure and take up the smaller jobs he’s been offered in the months since he saved Fala and Halona from the effects of the last great disaster?

Gravity is a great adventure tale combining sci-fi, climate science, suspense and danger to achieve an involving story reminiscent of the classic sci-fi of the golden 50s and 60s films. Definitely worth the investment and well researched, it could easily have happened in our world were we have to tackle alien technology in our time. Although I am not a big fan of sic-fi genre but still I liked reading this book because of its face paced storyline.

In short, I would suggest that take a seat and get ready for a roller coaster ride of adventure. Author Corkill had done a great job to bring a well-developed story-line which is filled with action and suspense. In conclusion, I would not hesitate to recommend Gravity to anyone that enjoys an action packed science fiction thriller.
